George Edward Lowe, November 10, 1957 – March 2, 2025...Well THIS was sad to wake up to.
This morning, before I even had the chance to start my latest round of doom scrolling and computer problems, I ran into the news on the socials that George Lowe, the incomparable voice of Space Ghost from the Space Ghost Coast to Coast era of the character, had passed away at the shockingly young age of 67.
Space Ghost Coast to Coast (and the original incarnation of Cartoon Planet) were a fixture in my youth to the point where my teacher had to actually tell me I was BANNED from talking about the show (which made weekend share time very boring from me going forward). Still, it was something I greatly enjoyed and it was also my introduction into much more expensive action figures when the SGC2C line came out (Never did find Moltar, Zorak, or Brak before my interest waned, though).
George Lowe, of course, has many other voice roles form the Ghost Planet Studios/Williams Street days, including Celebrity Deathmatch, Robot Chicken, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Sealab 2021, and others. But Space Ghost is easily his most famous role.
In most incarnations of Tifa vs. Chun-Li, there was no question that Space Ghost was going to take up the announcer role (and at one point, also the judge role), and Mr. Lowe's work as Tad Ghostal was a huge reason for that. The voice was iconic and fit perfectly for the tone and mood of what the modern Space Ghost needed to be. So much so, that when that voice made its way to other roles, you'd recognize it as "The Space Ghost Voice." He was one of the few elements of Tifa vs. Chun-Li that persisted throughout the many incarnations of it.
I'm sure I'll use Space Ghost again in the future, but he'll
probably have better treatment than how the end of Tifa vs. Chun-Li did him... maybe... possibly... Space Ghost did deal with quite a bit of slapstick and physical comedy.
From anecdotes I'd heard over the years, he seemed like a really good guy to be around. I had an opportunity when I was rally young to meet him, but, alas, with nothing for him to autograph, and limited time to wait in line, I was out of luck. I never got that second chance later in life.
My condolences to his family and friends.
Rest in peace, Mr. Lowe."What are YOUR superpowers?"
